Atuel River
Born in the Andes mountain range, the Atuel River is the longest river in Mendoza. The high walls of the river canyon, located just southwest of San Rafael, have been chiseled out by time and are splashed with lush vegetation.
The Atuel River Canyon is a major tourist attraction, and here you will find hotels, white water rafting and canoeing, camping sites and lodges, country clubs, horseback riding, hiking, rock climbing, diving and many other recreational activities.
Diamante River
Originating from a glacial lagoon of the same name on the Maipo (a volcano in the Andes mountain range), the Diamante River flows through San Rafael and is another major tourist attraction. It boasts to be one of the finest rafting rivers in the country, as well as one of the best places for recreational fishing.
Local excursions from the Diamante include "Villa 25 de Mayo", which was the first settlement of the region. Walking the village's old clay streets is like stepping into the past. "The San Rafael Fort", located within the village was built in 1805 and declared a national monument in the 1940's.
Las Leñas
Known for its winter sport activities, Las Leñas is one of the most important ski resorts in Latin America, offering an ideal season from June to October with a slope that runs 1400 m (4600 ft), and ski runs with over 40 km (25 miles) of extensions. In the off-season, activities such as horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing are also popular. El Sosneado valley, Los Molles (Malargüe), Valle Hermoso, are also conveniently located and offer an abundance of recreational excursions including thermal baths, fishing, hiking, sightseeing and more.
